LNG jetty Brunsbüttel

Removing concrete down to the reinforcement on the thresholds of a jetty deck, with no land access and entirely over water.

Duration

2 weeks

Segment
The challenge

Working on a jetty without road access

Commissioned by Ballast Nedam Infra and Hakkers, we were tasked with removing the concrete on the thresholds of the LNG terminal jetty deck in Brunsbüttel down to the reinforcement, allowing the subsequent concrete work to follow immediately.

The site was inaccessible by road. All equipment had to be transported by water and assembled on-site. Furthermore, because the work was performed directly over the water, the process water required as much attention as the concrete itself.

‍

The process

Transport by water and assembly on a work pontoon

In Glückstadt, the 1,600-bar hydrodemolition units, the demolition robot, and all other equipment were loaded onto the vessel Sonja and transported by water to the jetty. Once there, the setup was assembled piece by piece on the work pontoon and hoisted into the work area through a hatch in the deck shielding.

From that moment on, the actual work could begin.

‍

The solution

Layer by layer down to the reinforcement

An Aquacutter robot, powered by a unit delivering 1,600 bar at 177 liters per minute, processed the thresholds pass by pass, exposing the reinforcement underneath. In some areas, only a small amount needed to be removed, while in others it was up to approximately 550 mm, requiring constant depth checks throughout the process.

A backup robot and a second unit were kept ready on the pontoon, ensuring that a single malfunction could not bring the work to a standstill.

The process water was pumped from the deck to a container on the pontoon, cleaned in our EcoClear water treatment system, and recycled back into the demolition process. A closed-loop system, from the first pass to the last.

The entire project was completed in two weeks.
