Stadsverwarming Assendelft

ADS transformed a concrete district heating building in Assendelft from a functional structure into a work of art — through hydrodemolition, shotcrete and a colourful coating.

The challenge

More than just a technical renovation

A concrete district heating building in Assendelft had to be renovated. But the client and the municipality had a more ambitious goal in mind: the building was to become a work of art that the residents of the neighbourhood could be proud of. The technical challenge lay in cleaning and restoring the concrete in a way that could also serve as a substrate for the artistic finish, without disturbing the surrounding neighbourhood.

The process

Collaboration between engineering and art

ADS carried out the hydrodemolition work, cleaning the concrete surface and removing affected concrete. After cleaning and repairing the structure, a finish was designed in close collaboration with artists and the client that fits the identity of the neighbourhood. The schedule was tight: the building could not disappear behind scaffolding and barriers for too long. The project was completed within three weeks.

The solution

Hydrodemolition plus shotcrete plus coating — from concrete block to work of art

The entire concrete surface was cleaned by means of hydrodemolition and the affected concrete was removed. Next, a levelling layer of wet shotcrete was applied, after which the whole was provided with various colours of coating. The whole has been beautifully finished with impressive, natural images. A remarkable project that is a feast for the eyes for the surroundings.
