Hydrocracker Petrobrazi

ADS developed a patented method to remove extremely hard refractory concrete from a hydrocracker in two weeks — a job that previously took four months.

The challenge

Removing extremely hard refractory concrete from a small-diameter installation

Petrobrazi Refinery (Romania) was looking for a fast method to remove extremely hard refractory concrete — with a compressive strength of 190 N/mm² — from a hydrocracker with a diameter of 800–1000 millimetres. Until recently, this demolition work was carried out by manual chipping: a four-month effort of round-the-clock 24/7 operation under very tough conditions.

The process

From four months to two weeks

Especially for Petrobrazi Refinery, ADS developed a revolutionary method that completed the same job in just two weeks. This delivered an enormous saving in man-hours, but above all through a sharply reduced downtime of the installation. The project in Romania was completed entirely according to schedule and without damage to the steel structure.

The solution

Revolutionary method — now patented

By coupling several high-pressure units together, ADS generated an enormous force with which the concrete was removed without damaging the steel piping. Even the existing anchoring could be preserved, so that the client could install its new refractory concrete lining without any further pre-treatment. This unique application has been awarded a patent for ADS.
